Zaragozan perusti yli 2000 vuotta sitten jouluevankeliumista tuttu roomalainen keisari Augustus (Caesar Augusto), jonka nimestä kaupunki on nykyisen nimensä saanut.
Suomesta tänne on kätevintä tulla lento-junayhdistelmällä. Ensin lento joko Barcelonaan tai Madridiin. Sieltä pääsee luotijunalla (on hintavaa) tunnissa Zaragozaan tai sitten normaalilla pikajunalla (halvemmalla) vajaassa kahdessa tunnissa Zaragozaan. Lentäenkin välilaskuja käyttäen pääsee.
Tuesday 26.9.2017 Zaragoza. I have walked my four last days with Mikael a nice and intelligent man from Prag, Czech Republic. Yesterday we arrived together here in Zaragoza. This town was the end of his camino and I decided to spend two nights in this interesting town. Mikael is very well aware and interested of political processes in his country, Europe and the in the world. This is the reason, of course that our kilometers are completed with constant debate of politics. He has lived his life first in socalist Czechoslovakia and then in Czech Republic and married his wife in Lithuania. Then it is no wonder that major differences in living standards and conditions between people in EU members states in western Europe and people in "new" member countries for ex-socialist countries are topics of our discussions. These differences could not have been "harmonized" like many norms of legislation have been harmonized. - Welcome to eastern Europe, he says often with irony in his voice when we are comparing for instance differences in health care services or living conditions of retired people. He is right, of course. There is still a lot to do inside EU and it will unfortunately take at least decades. Anyway these kind of meetings between people are the best benefits of camino for sure. Hopefully our ways will cross in the future, Mikael.
Town Zaragoza is a bit bigger town than Helsinki (660 000 inhabitants). I can say that choosing this town for a break in the camino was a good choice. Most towns in Iberian peninsula are not founded by Spanish - Zaragoza neither. It was Roman emperor Augustinus (Caesar Augusto) whose name is mentioned in this since 2000 year ago and the name Zaragoza has its roots connected to name Caesar Augusto. For a traveller this town is easy to reach. The old town an places to see are concentrated in a quite small area on southern side of river Ebro which is deviding the town. All places to see can be reached by foot. The center of everything is the square of massive and beautiful cathedral Basilica de Pilar and the cathedral itself. I a distance of some quarters there are several museums and the most remarkable is the museum of Francesco de Goya, son of Zaragoza. The museum has it's home in a large and modern building of four floors. During my visit there was one room full of prints of Goya other rooms presenting works of painters and sculptors before and after Goya. One room was devoted to prints of Pablo Picasso and his enthusiasism in bull fights. A funny detail of this room was a photo of Pablo Picasso imitating a toreador white large underpants on and a white towel in his hands as a muleta.
In a distance of some hundred meters from Basilica Pilar square stands La Aljaferia, a palace and a fortress built by Moorish king in 11th century. At the moment it restored completely and is now in a list of Unesco Word Heritage. The regional parliament has it's meetings in La Aljaferia nowadays.
Even thoug all these numerous places to see Zaragoza is not the most popular tourist attraction in Spain. This is something I really like. Streets, museums, cafes and restaurants are not crowded. The mood of services is friendly and prices reasonable. You may have "menu del dia" with ten euros, a coffee or a beer with one and a half euro. The tourist info tells that a bit more than a million tourists visit Zaragoza every year, most of them are Spanish. Easiest way to reach Zaragoza elsewhere from Europa is to use combination aeroplane-train. First flight to Madrid or Barcelona and then by train to Zaragoza. Speed train from Madrid or Barcelona takes a tourist here in one hour (with expenses), a normal fast train in less than two hours cheaper.
Basilika Pilarin aukio on Zaragozan vanhan kaupungin elävä keskus.
The square of Basilica Pilar is the lively center of the old town of Zaragoza.
